The Washington State National Guard of Spokane searched out CDPHS in a successful attempt to send the Eagle home to its place of birth. This gigantic Bald Eagle, the emblem of our nation is therefore dedicated to the Armed Forces of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

Picture
On December 26, 2009 the Bald Eagle you see here still perched on the Washington National Guard property where he has stood since the 1980s. This gift was presented to the Clayton Deer Park Historical Society. We brought it home to Clayton, Washington during the summer of 2010.

Picture
This is a Kinko reprint on canvas of Leno Prestini's most loved painting entitled GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY and will be hand delivered to the CDPHS Museum the day it opens by. The original can be seen at the Stevens County Historical Society Museum in Colville.

Picture
This Honor Roll of our Service men was in the front window of the Clayton Mercantile. Removed only long enough to add more name by the gentle hands of Mrs. Ruth Stelting.

Picture
Karen Renner Meyer on the right was born and raised in Clayton. She now lives in Loon Lake and is president of the Loon Lake Historical society. She presented this sign from the Prestini Memorial Museum CDPHS. Other members of the Prestini Project Committee at the table are De Palen and Glendine Leonard.

These two Terra Cotta priceless pieces belong to Mark Chapman and Cire Gray who now live on the Herman Johnson ranch just north of Zion Hill Cemetery and have since 1983. They will loan these pieces to the CDPHS to display at the Leno Prestini Display August 14, 15 and 21, 22, 2010, from 10 to 4.

Brad Campbell sent us this picture of a Broadview Dairy bottle he found south of Clayton. He is loaning it to the CDPHS for our summer displays. Thank you, Brad!

This is a set of cones used in brick kilns to test the temperature. Four cones are melted completely over. One is just starting to melt. That means that he bricks are ready to come out of the kiln. This was donated by the Leliefeld family.

Picture
This is an example of the fancy terra cotta tile made at the Clayton Brickyard. It was donated by the Leliefeld family.

Picture
This long handled "ladle" is standing next to a 4 foot measure tape. We are trying to find out the use for it. It was found at the Brickplant by Phil Leliefeld.

Picture
This is very similar to the Sartori profile below. It was found in the ground near Clayton. Was this a practice piece? Was it a reject? It certainly is a wonderful find! if you enlarge the picture you can see Cecil Sater under the lapel on the right.

Picture
This terra cotta piece is on the west side of the Clayton Grange Hall (old Moose Hall). It is signed by Cecil Sater.

Picture
This is one of 3 multiple share certificates donated to the CDPHS by Warren Nord. He bought the shares in the 1950s. The mining company was started by Leno Prestini, Burton Stewart and Sam Gardner.

Picture
This is the back of the above mining shares.

After 8 months of removal, transporting, storing, restoration, remounting and landscaping, our prize Artifact stands ready for Inspection on Military Dedication Day, August, 7, 2010, at Clayton, WA.

Picture
This Artifact runs a close second to the Eagle itself. It is an all brass plaque presented by the 1st Battalion, 161 Infantry to the CDPHS. It was mounted near the Eagle this summer (2010).

Picture
The all new bronze plaque will join with the National Guard Plaque above & tell the History of this Clayton Terra Cotta National Emblem.

Picture
This is the night watchman’s time clock that was used at the Washington Brick and Lime Company. Martin Olson, Eddie Olson, and many others used this on their job. They would make entries at different locations during their shift to show that they had made their rounds. Our thanks to Art Stelting for donating this to the Society.

Picture
This is a Spokane Pottery crock. Spokane Pottery Company was located on the
property that Sharon Olson owns now. The colored tiles are from the Clayton
factory. They were donated by Don and Lorraine Ball. The terra cotta colored
tile was found at the old brick plant by Anni and Bill Sebright. It is now on the entry way of their house.

Picture
This is a close up of the Spokane Pottery logo from the picture above.

Picture
You can see the hand and finger prints on these baked clay samples. Some say this was done to test the clay. Others say it was done for the fun of it when working had idle time. Can you see that one even has a glaze on it?

Picture
This 3 and a half inch brick that was probably used as a sale’s sample. We have never seen another like it. This is also from the Leliefeld family.

Picture
These are more examples of the materials made at the Clayton Brickyard

Picture
This homemade hammer is by a 1 foot measure. It was also found at the Brickplant by Phil Leliefeld.

Don Ball (right) and Pete Coffin are holding the heavy wire that once held the Arcadia flume together. Lorraine Ball’s grandfather, Art Milner, got the surplus wire when the flume was dismantled. Art used it for fencing wire. Our thanks to Lorraine and Don for donating the wire to the CDPHS. Art Milner built a barn with the tongue and groove flume boards. The barn burned down many years ago.

Picture
This according to Glenn Borden is called an elephant tooth. The one severl pictures above has only 5 sections, this one has 7. It was used in the Terra Cotta Factory, because temperature was more important in the terra cotta process than in the brick process. Our thanks to Norma Burnett for donating it to the Society
