A DUKE'S MIXTURE OF JEFF LILLY, PETE COFFIN, and CLAYTON BRICK YARD DAY 2010

When the Star of the Dedication was by all accounts a work of art, it seems only fair the entire work force should share the spotlight. And here they are with a personal photograph to begin this page.

Picture
In my book, it’s ladies first. There were only three girls on the restoration team, Judy Lilly being one. While the painting was in full swing there wasn't a word uttered, just 100 % concentration. Judy is the wife of Jeff Lilly. She asked to join the team long before the first brush stroke.

Picture
Lorraine Nord was quality control personified. She didn’t talk much. When she saw an imperfection, she approached, pointed and quietly pointed out what had been missed. She never moved away until the imperfection was perfected by the guy that had the right color paint.

Picture
Steely eyed Jeff Lilly, fills out the restoration crew. When the paint crew said it was done, no bones about it, THE MAGNIFICENT 7 are #1!

Picture
Just down the road a short piece from Clayton, WA, stands the gentleman’s farm of Jeff & Judy Lilly. The guy sure has a way with a camera.

THIS CLAYTON BRICKYARD DAY IS BALLOONING OUT OF PROPORTION. Don and Lorraine Ball have been donating balloons for youngsters for years. Balls supply the balloons and helium and the Brock boys blow them up and give them out to happy little parade goers.

Jeff Lilly took this picture of the Deer Park VFW Color Guard who the the Clayton Brickyard Day Parade.

ll the time the Fun Run, benefit breakfast, family pictures being taken with the Eagle in the background and a parade in full swing, some people had to work. One was Cheryl, owner of the Clayton Brickyard Tavern. What a Doll!

Restoring the Eagle required by far and away the most skill. If the workmanship was shoddy, within a short period, the grout would deteriorate and the work would have to resume. The professional volunteer Terra Cotta workers from left to right, Lyle Thompson from Mead, Washington, headed up the band. Tom Taylor from Clayton, WA, was his right hand man. Pete Coffin headed up and took charge of the entire restoration project. Lyle and Pete removed all the original grouting. Pete ground it out with a diamond tipped grinder blade. He even ground out the hair line cracks in the Terra cotta. Then began the meticulous job of preparing the proper mixture of Terra Cotta Grout (ingredients: fine silica sand, cement, water and MOOSE MILK) Lyle and Tom teamed up to cram the special Grout into every nook and cranny while Pete and Bill Sebright filled the widened cracks with Epoxy. Large areas missing terra cotta were drilled and supplied with stainless steel studs and filled to over flowing with the super grout and fiberglass mixture. Lyle would smooth them out with a couple swaths of his spatula and the defects filled with chocolate colored grout disappeared right before your very eyes. In no time flat, the reiteration was complete. The Eagle was allowed to cure for a week. Meticulously cleaned, given a latex primer coat, and the final coat of Polyurethane paint was applied at TAMMY REHMS “Beauty Parlor” which she furnished at no charge including electricity.

The magic touch. A majestic scene. You can wait around and hope but you'll never see a sight like this again!

This young man is J.L. Brian, Author/Writer, alias Jeffrey Lilly and Jeff (TIGER) Lilly. He is a professional photographer and he writes for the Deer Park Gazette. He is professional in all his endeavors. We, the CDPHS, are very fortunate to be able to say, "He is on our team!"

During Clayton Brickyard Day 2010 the Costa and Michel families who lived at the far east end of Clayton gathered together for a reunion. Duane Costa pictured above seated with his lifelong friend Art Stelting headed up the reunion.

Picture
A small contingent of the Costa-Michel reunion gathered at the tavern. We don’t recall their names. If you study some of the names listed below you find some. There were 23 Hotel rooms in one Spokane Hotel reserved for these wonderful people. The last they were seen, they were having the time of their lives.

This is a partial group photo taken around 1938. Mira Costa, the little girl second from the right and Robert A. Clouse, Webmaster, were classmates. Bob will be 80 years old come Christmas day this year. This has been one exciting year in his life!!!
