MSgt. Clifford Wade Klawunder, son of George F. and Olive Klawunder of Clayton, joined the Army after graduating from Deer Park High School in 1933 and served for 30 years, retiring in 1963 at age 50. First we acknowledge, WILBUR McGAREY, first on the left, middle row. Secondly, OLIVER HIGGINS, Back Row 2nd from Left. This is the first evidence of a photo of these two WW II Soldiers. The reason for the elation follows. Each mentioned have been acknowledged as WW II Veterans, all congregated in this historic photo. Front row- MILES KING, LEONARD RENNER, second Row, WILBUR MCGAREY, third row, ALAN BERG, OLIVER HIGGINS, DARWIN LAMBIER, ARTHUR STELTING & SILVIO COSTA. For a total of 8 from this tiny class alone that were destined to join the United States Armed Forces, thus changing their lives forever.

A very young Roland Smith at Clayton Grade School 1934. He joined the Armed forces and fought and died for his beloved USA during WW II. He remembered us, we shall always remember him!

If you count them up, there are 18 boys in this class. Eleven of which are bona fide WW II Veterans. Possibly others moved on to other locals and dropped out of sight of our honor Roll. As time goes by perhaps we will find more recent and even see more of these youngsters in WW II Uniform or at least as adults. That is our goal and if we have learned one thing from these young men, “Don't give up easily!”
